The assumptions

How the number is worked out.

Every figure comes from what you enter. Change any input and the result follows; nothing is borrowed from an industry average.

01

Missed calls a week

Calls a week multiplied by the share that nobody answers.

02

Callers lost

Missed calls minus the callers who reach you later anyway, because they call back or leave a voicemail you return in time.

03

Jobs lost

Callers lost multiplied by your close rate. This assumes a missed caller would have booked at the same rate as the callers you do answer.

04

Revenue lost

Jobs lost multiplied by your average job value and by 52 weeks. The monthly figure is the yearly one divided by 12.

05

What it leaves out

Repeat work, referrals and maintenance agreements that a first job can lead to are not counted, and neither is the cost of answering more calls. Seasonal trades have busy and quiet months, so the monthly figure is an average.

06

Why there is no industry average

Published missed-call rates for trade businesses vary widely depending on who measured them and how, so the calculator uses only your figures. Your phone system's call history shows your real rate.

In Timber

Timber does not answer the phone. It makes sure someone calls back.

Connect your Quo (formerly OpenPhone) line and missed calls stop disappearing into the call log.

Every missed call, listed

Timber reads the calls nobody returned, with their voicemail transcripts, and counts them in your morning summary.

New callers become leads

A caller who is not in your CRM is flagged as a possible new lead, and becomes one when you say so.

Replies drafted

Timber drafts the "sorry we missed you" reply for you to approve, so a call-back does not depend on someone remembering.

FAQ

Questions about missed calls.

How is the lost revenue calculated?

Missed calls a week, minus the callers who reach you later, multiplied by your close rate, your average job value and 52 weeks. The monthly figure is that yearly total divided by 12.

Where do I find my missed-call rate?

In your phone provider's call history or reports. Most business phone systems show answered, missed and voicemail calls; count a week or two, including after-hours calls.

Is every missed call a lost job?

No, which is why the calculator asks for your close rate and for how many missed callers reach you later anyway. Spam, wrong numbers and existing customers checking in are not new work, so leave them out of your weekly call count if you can.

Does the calculator use industry statistics?

No. Figures published by phone and answering services disagree widely, so every number here comes from what you enter.

Does Timber answer calls for me?

No. Timber does not pick up the phone. With your Quo (formerly OpenPhone) line connected, it lists the calls nobody returned with their voicemail transcripts, flags callers who are not in your CRM as possible new leads, and drafts the reply for you to approve.

Is anything I enter stored or sent?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to Timber.
