What makes an estimate easy to say yes to.
The customer is comparing you with two other companies. These are the parts of an estimate that make the decision simple.
A scope in plain words
List the work the way the customer would describe it, one line per task or material, so they can see what they are paying for.
Options, not one number
Two or three options let the customer choose how much to spend rather than whether to hire you. Keep the differences between them easy to see.
What is not included
Write down exclusions and allowances, such as permits, hidden damage or decking replaced per sheet, before the job starts rather than arguing about them after.
How long the price holds
Material prices move. A valid-until date, often 30 days, keeps you from honoring a price you set months ago.
How to say yes
A signature line, the deposit if you take one, and how to book. Make the next step obvious.
Your own numbers
The example prices only show how a job breaks into lines. Replace every one with your own rates before you send anything.
When the estimate lives in Timber.
This template makes one PDF. Timber builds the quote, sends it and follows it up. The CRM, quotes included, is free.
Priced from your photos
Send the site photos and your notes. Timber asks the questions that change the price and builds the quote line by line from your own rates, for you to edit.
Accepted online
Customers open the quote from a link and accept it there, and an accepted quote can be turned into an invoice.
Followed up
When a quote goes quiet, Timber writes the follow-up and leaves it in your drafts until you approve it.
Questions about the estimate template.
What is the difference between an estimate and a quote?
In everyday use the words often mean the same thing. Strictly, an estimate is an approximate price that can change once work starts, and a quote is a fixed price for the scope described. Choose Estimate, Quote or Proposal as the title, and say in the notes which you mean.
Are the example prices right for my area?
No. They illustrate how a job breaks into line items. Prices vary widely by region, season and supplier, so replace every price with your own before you send the estimate.
How do Good, Better and Best options work?
Turn on options and the estimate shows three columns side by side, each with its own line items and total. The tax and discount settings apply to all three. Rename them to suit the job, for example Repair, Replace and Upgrade.
How long should an estimate be valid?
Thirty days is common. Choose a shorter period when material prices are moving, and a longer one for work booked well ahead.
Is anything I type sent to Timber?
No. The form, your logo and the PDF are all handled by your browser. Your business details and the draft are saved in this browser's local storage so they are there next time, and Clear form deletes them. We count page visits and downloads anonymously, without any of the document's contents.
Can customers accept the estimate online?
Not from the PDF. In Timber, quotes go out as a link the customer can accept online, and an accepted quote can be converted to an invoice.
Is the estimate template free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on how many estimates you download.
